- Donas Marthe (1885-1967)
Marthe Donas is a leading Belgian artist of Modernism. She discovered the European avant-garde in Paris during the First World War. In 1917, she meets sculptor Archipenko (whose influence can clearly be felt in the present sculpture) in Nice. Back in Paris they both became members of the Section d’Or group alongside other famous artists such as Leger, Braque, Duchamp and Brancusi.
In the 1920s, Donas started using the pseudonym of Tour D’Onasky later became Tour Donas to exhibit her work throughout Europe. She was one of the very first women abstract painter. Back in Belgium, she interrupted her work for twenty years before starting a second career.
