- Magnelli Alberto (1888-1971)
Alberto Magnelli is an Italian artist born in Florence in 1888. In 1913, after befriending Picasso, Gris, and Léger in Paris, his work made a shift toward geometric abstraction influenced by cubism and futurism, culminating with the series “Pierres”, a set of abstract paintings inspired by a trip to the Carrara marble region in Italy.
Beginning 1936, the artist created textural geometric collages including patterned papers and iron wire, and more traditional materials such as gouache and black chalk. During the Second World War he settled in the South of France in Grasse (along with Robert Delaunay and Jean Arp), before moving in 1959 to Meudon, France, where he died in 1971.
